Come see a fully functional letterpress print shop built into the back of a converted 1982 Chevy Step van. White Mischief

Inspired by the movie White Mischief set in the 1940's, Sideshow designed and printed these mysterious invitations. These square invitations were 2 color letterpress (blind + black) on 220 Crane Lettra Paper and then edged in a mustard yellow. We love the simplicity and style of these vintage inspired invitations.

White Washing Wood

We love trying new things here at Sideshow. Our latest experiment; white washing wood for a invitation (we will share the full invite soon!). To achieve the affect we were looking for, the white washing turned out to be a 3 step process.

1.) We brushed on a thin coat of grey stain to blonde wood veener paper.

2.) We applied a watered down white paint over the top of the grey stained wood.

3.) We took to the sheets with a light grade of sand paper and spot sanded each piece.

The whole process was a nice reminder of how we love to experiment! The finished piece of white washed wood was letterpressed 1 color. We are thrilled with the out come.

Calligraphy Map Invitations

A beautiful grey and yellow invitation from Melissa and Amy, the talented designers behind Atheneum Creative. We enjoyed being the printer on this job and bringing these thoughtful invitations to life.

From Melissa and Amy: Katy and Alex were look ing for a unique way to introduce and share their story—starting right with the invitation. Chicago is home to both the bride and groom; it’s where their relation ship began and it is where they will share their fist kiss as husband and wife. The city means so much and holds so many memories for them, what better way to tell their story than with a custom illustrated map of their personal Chicago land marks (such as their high rise apartment, the bench they got engaged on, the church and reception location, and many others).

The beautiful map illustration was done by Elizabeth Porcher Jones, stunning work as always.

Something we've been doing more and more at Sideshow Press lately is printing other designers work. We always love the chance to work with talented designers to produce their work on the press. So when Jay Fletcher came calling, we were thrilled. We're big fan of Jay and his work so it was a true honor to get the chance to print his well designed wedding invitation.

IN JAY'S WORDS:

As much as it might have been fun to use a bunch of blackletter typefaces and neon inks, I figured it’d be best to reign it in and create something that felt like a merger of both our personalities. The end result takes that idea literally by sandwiching simple elements & textures which represent the two of us as individuals to create a finished package that’s distinctly “us.” That’s my design mumbo-jumbo explanation, anyway. Really, I just wanted to put her in a cameo and myself in a plaid shirt, and somehow print it on actual wood.

The invitation was letterpressed cherry wood veneer which we then duplexed to crane lettra pearl white cover stock.

A Chef's Dinner

For the second year in a row, Charleston's finest chefs will be gathering for a private dinner in the next few weeks to celebrate food. We worked with Chef Barbara Lynch and her team to create packaging for an Italian Picnic Basket which served as this years invitation, (see last years). Each item in the basket was hand wrapped and adorned with a sticker labeling the contents. Kristin Newman Designs is planning the event which we know will be spectacular.

Recycled Liners and Handwritten Type

A save the date for a upcoming wedding to be held at a private South Carolina plantation this Spring. The bride came to us a with the request for an invite that would feel eclectic, beautiful, and sustainable. A few of the sustainable elements include, envelope liners from an Audubon book (purchased from a local book re-seller) and collected quail feathers from the family plantation. The type is handwritten then scanned in and foil stamped in gold. The less formal handwritten type, combined with the gold foil printing and Italian papers gives this set a beautiful and approachable aesthetic.

This was a special project for Sideshow Press. We had the pleasure of working on Sarah's wedding invitation several years ago and were so pleased when she re-connected with us to work on her upcoming baby shower invitation. The invites were silkscreened on wooden blocks and styled to follow the format of a baby block. We used a mixture of type and beautiful calligraphy by Elizabeth Jones. The blocks were packaged in kraft boxes with a letterpress hostess card, silk ribbon and finished with custom printed wrapping paper. It was so fun to work on yet another special event in Sarah's life. We can't wait to meet Baby Beasley!

A Chef's Dinner

Eight of Charleston's finest chefs will be gathering for a private dinner in the next few weeks to celebrate food. What better way to invite them than with a jar of lard from their well know fellow chef Barbara Lynch. The jars were wrapped with kraft paper, tied with string and sealed with one color letterpressed labels on Gmund gold paper. The invites were hand delivered by a local butcher and baby pig.

Several weeks ago, Shira Savada, the real weddings & editorial coordinator for Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine sent us and email asking if we would like to contribute to a special blog series designed to tie-in to their Summer 2010 issue. We were asked to work with an opalescent color palette (peaches, pinks and lavenders). We jumped at the chance. Today our invitation set was featured on their blog, The Brides Guide. Finally putting and end to the East Coast, West Coast beef, the ladies of Sideshow Press earned some street cred with our latest venture for the TheBadCharacter. The LA based design studio sought to combine offset printing with the accent of letterpress. What was born is one bad business card.

We're now offering letterpress printing to our fellow designers. TheBadCharacter business cards are just one of the many jobs we've been working on lately.

We're excited to announce the release of IMPRESSIVE Printmaking, Letterpress and Graphic Design. Eight of our letterpress projects are featured in Gestalten Press's latest publication.

Inspired by the challenge of hands-on tweaks and unpredictable results as well as the tactile qualities of different inks, papers, and binding techniques, today’s creatives are rediscovering old-fashioned printing methods and crafts. Impressive is a topical exploration of the interplay between current trends in graphic design and traditional handiwork such as letterpress printing, hand-cut linotype, chiselled woodblocks, and embossing. In addition to a rich selection of invitations, business cards, stationery, posters, and other material printed by hand, it offers personal insights from designers who are using old-fashioned techniques to create cutting-edge work.

The book is set to release in North America in mid May. We can't wait to receive our copy.

A New Look at Charleston

You can't beat living and working in Charleston. The character and tradition of this city, along with the enthusiasm and creativity of the people here, is always inspiring. Often we find ourselves challenged by clients to capture the aura of Charleston graphically which may sound easy, but to do it justice is another thing. Our latest attempt to freshly bottle Charleston was for our client Courtney Keen for her wedding save the date. We turned to local photographer Doug Hickok of Hue and Eye photography for inspiration. Doug has an extensive library of simple graphic images of Charleston, full of color and detail. We backed the invitation and had custom stamps made with a photo of his which brought a pop of color and Charleston charm to the set.

We are frequent visitors to Graphic-Exchange, a blog by graphic designer Fabien Barral. He posts work by other designers, photographers and illustrators from all over the world that inspire him. Caroline and Jon came to us looking for a simple save the date for their wedding this June. They both have a classic sensibility and share a love of simple type and the South Carolina landscape. The combination of their styles and interests made for a handsome set. We printed the invite with two color letterpress on 200lb Crane's stock, and sealed it with Magnoni envelopes with a custom two color letterpress liner.

Here is a simple/understated wedding invitation hot off our presses. The mix of calligraphy, type and decorative line flow together nicely to create quite an elegant set. We love to blend new and old styles together to emphasize elements of both, creating a more dynamic look.

Seigel Family Bar Mitzvah

We have recently finished working with Jayne Seigel on her son Joseph's Bar Mitzvah invitation. When Jayne first came to us, she shared a wonderful story of heritage, family history, and Joseph's close relationship with the family dog. Wanting to reflect the rich history of their family, we created a Seigel family letterhead, with a personal typed message from Jayne and her husband. We used vintage postcards from significant family locations as RSVP and accommodations cards. We really had fun working on this set and getting to know Jayne and her family throughout the process.

This past Friday we made trip to Columbia for the AIGA South Carolina InShow Awards. It's an annual event that features designs from across the state. We took home 5 cubes (made to look like cheese) and a special judges award for the Labelle/Parsons Invitations. We were also thrilled to receive Best of Show for the Sideshow Press stationery package. We always enjoy this event and are honored to have been included.

A Regal Affair

An intimate wedding in at Keswick Hall in Charlottesville, Virginia was our inspiration behind this regal set. (see the save the date we did earlier this year) Each piece of the invitation set was letterpressed and gold foiled. The set was complete with "A Guide to the Art of Packing" which contained tips for packing the right gear for this destination wedding. The weekend looked fabulous! Charm City Cakes did both the Wedding Cake and Grooms Cake. We were thrilled to be a part of such an unique event.

Pecha Kucha 4

The Sideshow Press ladies will be speaking at the up coming Pecha Kucha 4, Oct. 21. Come out and join us!

Pecha Kucha, Japanese for the sound of conversation, is a mix of show-and-tell, open-mike night and happy hour that has become a forum for ideas on design, architecture and other forms of creativity. Devised in 2003 in Tokyo, Pecha Kucha Night has spread virally to over 135 cities around the world as an informal forum for creative people to meet, network and show their work in public.

Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for just 20 seconds, giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

This is a set we just finished for our friends Kim and Will. Our challenge was to incorporate color, but keep things simple, so we came up with this thread treatment. Multi-colored spools and spools of thread later, we were finished! Kim did most of the assembly herself - great job Kim!

Several of months ago, we had the pleasure of working with Melissa Bigner, the editor of Charleston Weddings; Roo Way, a fantastic photographer; and Renato Poliafito, the owner of Baked, to create a mock wedding dessert spread. We were challenged with the task of designing materials that any bride could make and assemble. Stamps, cloth bags, twigs, vintage prints and lots of amazing desserts made for a beautiful shoot. Lowcountry Field Feast

We just finished these invitations for Lowcountry Field Feast, a field dinner to benefit Lowcountry Local First, an organization that advocates the benefits of a local living economy. Charleston chef Mike Lata of Fig will be preparing the feast out of local and sustainable food. We wanted the invite to be sustainable as well as respresentative of the event. We letterpressed the invite on the front of small seed envelopes, filled the envelopes with heirloom seeds and addressed the backs of the envelopes. Simple and reusable.

A Mountain Celebration

We just completed this set for a couple getting married in the mountains of South Carolina. This outside wedding will take place this fall in a meadow at the foot of the mountains. The bride provided us with images to get us inspired, it is truly a beautiful spot!

Reduce Reuse Recycle with Halle

Between chipboard, plantable seed paper, and rubber paper (made of 100% recycled tires) this invitation is by far the most green invite we've created to date. It was a great challenge to bring all of these materials and textures together, we used hand drawn type and illustrations to tie all of the various pages together. We're currently working on all of the event materials (some of which include) hand painted table cloths on organic cotton, plantable menus, and green screen graphics!

A Taste of Summer

Sewn leather and embossed luggage tags were mailed in a custom wrapped box to guests for our most recent client getting married in Keswick, Virginia. The bride and groom are avid travelers and are hosting a destination wedding - so the luggage tag was a perfect fit.

We just received word that Sideshow Press was chosen to be included in PRINT Magazine's Regional Design Annual...times two! There were over 5,000 entries this year so we are thrilled to have been chosen. And to make it even more special, the two pieces selected were pieces done for members of the Sideshow Press Family. The baby shower invite for Courtney and the birth announcement for Otto. The issue will be on news stands this November.

We are so thrilled to share the news that we are moving! After years, and we mean years, of searching, we've finally found the perfect home for our press. After nearly 60 years in business, Fralix Shoe Repair is closing their doors. The building is currently getting a fresh coat of paint inside and out and stained concret floors. We hope to be offically moved in by July 1, so please stop by and say "hello".

A Library Wedding

We just completed this set for our bride and groom getting married on the steps of the Pittsburgh Public Library. Keeping with the library theme, we created this set based on a small box of bookplates. Each set includes a custom wrapped box, invitation, response card and envelope, reception card, library history card and set of book plates for each guest. We love this small (3.5x5), non-traditional invite!

Charleston Meets Vietnam Part II

We've just completed this invitation for our "east meets west" bride and groom. This time we used blind letterpress, letterpress and gold edging on all pieces, which, we think was the perfect compliment to their save the date (see post from January 4th). The piece was finished off with a deep red letterpress liner and gold calligraphy by Elizabeth Jones.

Charleston Meets Vietnam

Our obsession with all things Asian was finally able to be translated into this Save The Date for a couple living in Hanoi, Vietnam. Originally from Charleston, the couple wanted something that represented both the east and the west. We used a combination of letterpress and foil stamping, which turned out great! Then we wrapped each piece with a banana leaf and a patterned band.
